Marian Aguilera: "I think the main thing is to laugh or to try" (March 2010)

Marian Aguilera is one of those actresses who came to fame after her role in the youth series "Al salir de clase" which reflected the lives of a group of teenage students and the issues they may have. Interestingly, it was not the first time Aguilera's face came on television, as in 1992, she made a foray into the world of cinema in the hand of James Road in the movie "El largo invierno".

That same year, Barcelona hosted the Olympic Games and Marian Aguilera was the little girl who was in charge of picking up the Olympic flame from Greece in the port of Empuries. On television, in addition to “Al salir de clase” she has starred in other series of less successful, such as “Esencia de Poder” and “Código Fuego”. She had more luck with “Los Hombres de Paco”, in which she participated in a supporting role between 2005 and 2009.

On July 15, 2009, her character, Sylvia, died soaked in blood in her father's arms after being shot by a group of gangsters, although her character appeared as a ghost in several episodes of the current season, guiding Paco to fight the forces of evil. And Marian Aguilera is now focused on the world of theater and we can see her in flesh and blood until April 4 at the Capitol Theatre with “Mi primera vez”, a play where four actors tell first sexual experiences in the world written by anonymous, real people like you. The first sexual experience is something that almost everyone has in common and has never been talked about so far.

"My first time" is a play in which sex is mixed with humor. Sex is fun, but carried to the theater much more. How do you get to participate in this play?
They took some time in Madrid. A colleague called to tell me they were looking for a substitute for one of the characters. I do not know what to do because at that time I had finished work and had nothing planned so I started to read my text but I could never imagine how it was assembled. They told me to come to rehearse and then decide if I wanted to do it. I went one day to test and it passed to me so well that I decided to try. When I realized it was on opening day and I was already inside.

You have a script, but the public have the option of writing their first experiences. What has been the "strangest" thing that you've encountered?
The truth is that people put funny things and there are times when we doubt if it is true or if they are joking when they come in groups. Either way they are amazing. The people involved are very good. We also had fun with what they say.

But the play is not all laughter, as you try all the "versions" of sex. Is it difficult to go from laughter to sadness?
The poster of this work does not give too many clues. . Most of the show is comedy, but obviously there are stories of all kinds and this is another story. I can easily move from one state to another because I'm going with a microphone and that creates a distance that makes the viewer have a certain distance from you. When you're with the card or talking to people, you don’t take that microphone and everything is closer.

Alternative theater while shopping ...
We can not say that something is commercial or alternative for the simple fact of whether it’s working or not. Being an alternative is not better or worse, if not different. There are things that my business is not what I like. Not because commercial is better or more beautiful. This is a show that single people would see as an alternative theater. If you put it in a large theater and that is for another public who are used to seeing easier and more commercial things. It's a easy show but not simpler. Anyone can entertain you beginning and ending with my grandmother.

A show for all audiences ...
Perfectly! It is very fun to see very serious old ladies come in, die of laughter, and it is funny. It is an opportunity to laugh in the theater, something that we’re not accustomed to, to come in and be surprised and be delighted by it. They are surprised because they see a young show they understand. That is very nice.

We all have our first time ... The first time we drive, the first time we go to the theater, the first time we have sex. How was your first time?
The truth is that I put it hard. I am a person who does so many things and I have so many activities that is almost always a first time. My first class ... I am very inquisitive, I move a lot and I have many first times for everything.

Tell me any one ...
I wish I could say, it is the first time that I am consistent.

We are in crisis, everyone knows and I think there is nothing in this life that we do not have to pay. Do we have to "fuck" more, because less and you can not forget these "problems"?
Well I think so. Imagine having lots of money and not to laugh. I think the main thing is to laugh at or try. Many times you have to put some on our part to make fun of others and ourselves.

Is there anything we can not laugh about in this life?
There are many mishaps that I think one can not joke about, so I think the important thing is to be thankful.

Who do you thank?
I try to look back at the good and be thankful for all that I have lived for and being alive. We are young and well.

Good and bad, do you regret anything? That is, your passage through television, leaving the TV for the theater.
I have not let go of the TV to go to the theater. In this work, one must take risks, but so far I do not regret anything. I did what I could in each moment as it had the capacity to decide at all times. You could have done better but it also could be worse.

Many remember her little face, smiling and happy, carrying the 1992 Olympic flame from Greece. She was 15, and Marian Aguilera loved dancing, the theater and music. She began to exploit her artistic talent in short films and features in the sporadic appearance of a Catalan production. Her big break came thanks to the series Al salir de clase, where she rubbed shoulders with other actors of her age, some of which eventually ended up triumphing in the small and big screen. Although her latest role in Los hombres de Paco is still remembered by its gore ending, the actress has long always wanted to do comedy at theaters. Mi primera vez successfully premiered in Madrid and in the coming weeks, Pepe Rubianes room occupies the Capitol Theatre in Barcelona.

Imported from Broadway, the play is based on the adjustment made in 2007 by the American Ken Davenport (one of the most charismatic and award-winning producers of New York) of the stories told by the internet surfers on a website created in 1991 by Peter Foldy and Stuart Carige, before the communicative phenomenon of blogging in the U.S. Marian Aguilera considers it a work for "people with an open mind" who want to have a good time. The story line is humorous, which is about real stories that are explained in monologues and dialogues during the hour and a half of the play. They all revolve around a theme, according to sexologists, more important for men than for women: the first day that you lose your virginity. And surely in this issue, we all have a story to tell, or to hide.

-When proposed to make this work, did you see as the main challenge in the theater talking about sex, without any restriction?

I do not know why but I never thought they were talking about sex. It wasn’t difficult, because it talks about sex but not the sexual spectacle. In this sense, it is not a difficult scene, I think it's all very light.

- Do you think the public thinks like you and is ready to assimilate naturally that sex scenes are told on stage?

This play is very interesting, and we talk about sex but not explicitly. It's nice because the topic is the first time, which is very important. The other day a sexologist said that if the first had not gone well, the experience could turn into traumatic. In the work we collect stories about people who had some issues, and this involves many emotions on the part of young people, or people with difficulties. Not so much the sex itself, but the stories that lie behind these people and that we can identify with.

-The human being is voyeuristic in nature, and it seems that if you talk about sex even more ...

Yes, perhaps looking at the website with all the stories is more interesting than watching the play. At the end there is an interpretation of how we imagine these people would write. It is a script written by real people.

- Is it a youth-oriented work?

It is of course not. Obviously there are older people who are very closed, and these things will not ever be spoken about. Of all these people, there is a high percentage that gets to laugh, even when they want, and just convinced. Normally things usually go wrong if the company is somewhat forced because these issues have not been treated, and then they leave a little disappointed. But in general people have been very open-minded and it is not meant to provoke.

- You think you can even serve as therapy for some couples who have lost communication on sexual matters? I say this for the humorous approach of the subject ...

Yes, certainly, because as explained the sexologist who commented you before, there are things when we see as important, especially if you have not had any problems. But if you have had a small problem, it is traumatic that can comsume your thoughts of the day, especially for men.

- In the work, oddly enough, just male actors are naked...

Yes, that is fine, especially for convenience, because cold weather (laughs). At first I went with a tank top and finally I put a shirt over it because it’s very cold in Madrid.

- The initiative began in America with a website where people explained how they did their first time. Spain has done the same with other sites. Do you think the stories are far from one side of the pond to the other?

I think the main difference is that in our case we can tell who the people come from their accents, as part of Spain where they come from. This is something that can not be done with American stories. Here it's more fun because we identify and locate more.

-They talk about sex but Mi Primera Vez is a comedy, a tale that the public does not see a lot. Has this been a major issue that you face as an actress on stage?

Yes, in some ways yes, because when I did not know how they would react to this role. But in the end I saw it of course, I was doing nothing concrete and it was an enjoyable work. In the end it is working with the body, and it trained me and seduced me and here I am (smiles).

-I did not remember you doing any comic role for an hour and a half ...

No (laughs). I had done a role in a comedy series but always playing the same character. But the truth is that I feel very comfortable, I love comedy.

-At the end of the work ensures that 100% of viewers who have gone to see it will want to have sex that night. Do you have statistics?

(Laughs) I do not know, I think it's a joke, I guess everyone, not all.

-There are many people who still remember you by that image in Empurias carrying the Olympic flame in ‘92 games. How did you get that 'role'?

Yes, it's funny. I was 15 and I called Rosa Verges, who was the artist who organized the ceremony. I’ve always liked the dance, theater and music. It was a wonderful experience, but I wasn’t interested in sports, I've never particularly liked it. But it was lovely occasion. It was an opportunity to meet and interact with many people, because we spent two weeks in a small hotel and it all happened very fast, but it was magical.

-Your television debut was the series on TV3 Laberint D'ombres, although the success came with the series Al salir de clase, from which came a batch of well-known actors now ...

Yes, it is true that this series was my first promotion at the state and media, because it was a series that had many viewers, but I must confess that it was not something premeditated. I arrived in Madrid due to personal circumstances and it was an opportunity to work with people of my age, it was the first time I did. I've never been addicted to television, and there are many things done and I sounded like a Martian. As I arrived there and they told me that this series was a production and I did not know what else. Okay, cool, for me it was just work. My requirement was for a pick or not, I never thought about the success we have.

-You participated in other series, such as Esencia de Poder, but most remembered in Los hombres de Paco which you spent seven seasons playing the same character. What do you think was the secret of this production?

I do not know what the mystery is. No one has the formula, despite those who have it and then see that the series do not workin the series or the movies. If there is such a formula, we could use the product according to the quantity or people who want that look ...

-You see unconformist actresses. How did you feel having played the same character for four years?

It can become tiring, really. People were wonderful, I loved the cast of actors and I had a very good time. But there comes a point where you want to go out there and do not want to take every day the same route, the same set and have the same hairstyle. That deprives you time to do other things.

-The end of the series was controversial and dramatic. Los hombres de Paco seemed more like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Did you like the ending like that for Silvia?

The series clearly began as a comedy and at the end changed a little and became more dramatic because they saw that people also like to mourn. This is television and I guess they wanted a final impact because it is what the viewer expects.

-Although you are more popular for your roles on television, I have counted 12 films and two shorts. Is it the genre which you feel most comfortable as an actress?

This is something that always depends on the project. Maybe you take something because you like the script or the director and the final twist and the thing you're not familiar with. But if I have left with something it is to the theater. In fact, although I've been doing television, I've always somehow linked to clothes, school or making smaller assemblies. Television has saved me in bad times, because this is a job you never know, and I am not one of those actresses who can really choose what to do. When you take time off from work and I always suggest a role towards the economic moment, which is something that gives you the opportunity to live and continue.

In 2007 the renowned producer Ken Davenport opened a play on Broadway that was based on sexual confessions of thousands of websurfers who uploaded their stories anonymously on a website. The play was called My First Time and different versions have been made worldwide. One of the latest, Mi Primera Vez, is performed at Capitol Club with a bunch of familiar faces from the small screen. Among them, Marian Aguilera.

GLOBAL PHENOMENON

I did not know about this phenomenon, nor knew anything of the work that had been done prior to Broadway. I don’t surf webpages nor am I up-to-date with anything current. I told the director, who told me not to think, and that was enough to rehearse. I had never done comedy in the theatre and I felt happy. I would never tell anyone of my first sexual experience, but the work was done anonymously, and many people could relate to it and have fun. We did too.

INTERACTIVITY

The actors had to be unfettered. It’s not really because of the sex stories, but because we are working with humour and the human body. So we’re somewhat exposed to the reaction of the public. From all the materials, we are making anonymous interpretation – we had to imagine their age, origin, or so they say, give them specific profile. At the entrance of the theatre, we distribute cards on which people can write their first sexual experience. We read them at various moments during the play. It’s very funny.

PREMATURE VOCATION

I started very small, doing a bit of everything: advertising, television, theater. It was a touchdown because at that age one does not know whether or not to engage in showbiz. At 15 I was in charge of receiving the Olympic flame. It was a very nice experience, plus it was the first time I learned the historical fact of the Olympics. Later I left Catalunya and I stayed in Madrid for personal reasons. There I starred in the series Al salir de clase. For me it was a way to make my life and never expected to have that impact in terms of popularity.

FAMILIAR FACES

I left Los Hombres de Paco because I needed change of scenery. After seven years I did not want to lock myself up in a studio, playing the same character. I wanted to give myself a little scratch, not to be so comfortable, to stimulate me. Luckily I got Mi Primera Vez. The fact that I and Bart [Santana] are familiar faces of television does not mean anything, we work like everyone else. The show is fun and funny, and the public enjoys it. Even with familiar faces, if the play is bad, people still won’t go to see it.

Marian Aguilera in "Vale" (2010)

Marian Aguilera appeared in a small section in Vale (2010) when she was still involved the play Mi primera vez. We don't have other details of the magazine.

After the death of her character in "LHDP" Marian has focused on the theater and now is playing "Mi primera vez". But the actress started her acting career with "Al salir de clase". In the series, Marian plays Miriam, the sister of Nico (Rodolfo Sancho). Marian then only left her red curls! Although still just as beautiful.

'Mi primera vez' at the Teatro Principal of Zaragoza (2010)

Mi Primera Vez/My First Time is a new generation show where four actors tell stories of early sexual experiences written by real people. The play then is transferred to Spain after its successful stint on Broadway. The first sexual experience is one of the few things that people around the world have in common. And rarely talk about it until now.

In 1991, a decade before the explosion of blogs, a web page was born that allowed people to anonymously tell their first time. The site became an instant phenomenon with more than 40,000 stories from around the world, funny, grotesque, straight, gay. Ken Davenport, a producer of Broadway, created a play based on this web page and in the summer of 2007 premieres My First Time, which has become a theatrical phenomenon. My first time is the first play to be built with the personal contributions made by Internet users.

The Spanish version www.cuentametuprimeravez.com has received stories, songs, documents used to create the play in Spain.

The ultimate success of Broadway has come to the capital of Aragon. A total of four actors tell the first experiences with sex through 40,000 stories that will not leave the audience indifferent. This therapeutic comedy attempt tells the stories from different perspectives; one of the things that all people have in common - their first time.

Zaragoza - “Mi primera vez” arrives this weekend at the Teatro Principal, Zaragoza as a new generation of show where four actors tell early sex experiences written by real people. The first sexual experience is one of the few things that people around the world have in common but rarely spoken about.

Marian Aguilera, Fran Nortes, Bart Santana and Mar Abascal give life to four characters that will, for an hour and a half, reveal the secrets of their first sexual experiences. Everything from "slutty" to "fun", as they discuss their protagonists.

Under the direction of Gabriel Olivares, “Mi primera vez” shows that people are more funny and stupid at that time that "although the principle is always a disaster," confessed the actress Mar Abascal. A play written by the Broadway producer Ken Davenport and based on a web page that allowed people to anonymously tell their first time. This site became an instant phenomenon that managed to bring together more than 40,000 stories from around the world; funny, grotesque, heterosexual or homosexual.

“Mi primera vez” is the first play to be built on personal contributions made by Internet users. In addition, the Spanish website cuentametuprimeravez.com has received testimonies, songs, documents used to create the play.
